Getting used to the new “world vision”

I woke up in the middle of the night and I could see the door frame, the edges of the furniture. I thought I was dreaming. I went back to sleep. I slept another 10 hours and woke up with clear vision, almost no foreign sensation on my right eye, and no blurry anymore. I was amazed!!!

I had my first follow up at 8:30am. I left the clinic almost 11am. It was another throughout examination, vision test, eye pressure check, check the position of the lenses, more tests with dilated eyes. The doctor said everything looks good. I’ll do two more follow ups before I go back to Jakarta.

I woke up with stomach pain again, either due to effect of anesthesia or the pre-surgery stress. Either way, I just had to deal with it with meds for now. Hopefully it goes away now that the surgery is behind me. The stomach pain weakened me so I spent the afternoon in bed mostly until I felt strong enough to go to the groceries to get some fresh fruits. Then my friend came back and made dinner. We chatted for a long time before going to bed.

It feels weird to not wear glasses anymore. There are moments that I feel like forgetting something, especially when I was preparing to go to bed. As last step, it’s always wash my faces (without glasses) so I could never see my face clearly. Now I can and feels weird. Like “hello stranger!”.

I am trying to minimize outdoor activities for now, just in case I don’t catch any particles that could cause infection. I am still wearing the protective glass to avoid me rubbing my eyes. Few more days of observation and I will get back to normal activities.

I am amazed by the advance of technology for the first time. The whole process feels very safe, careful, throughout, and mature. I am grateful for Dr. Ang, his team, the eye institute, for their care. I am grateful to have discovered them through a friend who did the procedure few years ago. I am grateful to be able to afford it. 😀

  1. Yay! Oh I’m so glad. I’ve been waiting to read an update and this is such wonderful news.

One of my goals for 2023 is to get Lasik or wavefront surgery. I’ve worn glasses since I was a little girl, and I truly hate it. Both of my sisters have had the corrective laser surgery done and LOVE the results.
I can’t imagine being able to see: when I go swimming, or shower, or wake up in the morning. I can’t imagine what it’s like to walk in the rain and not be looking through foggy/splattered glasses, etc.

  2. Ah, I’m excited for you!! I have terrible vision and have worn glasses since age 8, contact lenses since age 9. So, 30 years of contacts. I am so used to them that I don’t really even think about them too much anymore, but wow would it be wonderful to just be able to SEE! I still have to take them in and out every morning and night. I think eye surgery just makes me nervous…. but maybe someday? I know it’s been around a long time now, so I’m sure there are minimal issues, and it seems like most people have wonderful outcomes. I think I just mostly feel generally fine with wearing contacts, and I’m so used to it, so I don’t think about it too much. But hmmm. Maybe I should give it more thought.

    1. I wouldn’t have done it if I can continue with contact lenses. But that’s not possible anymore, so either glasses forever or surgery. If your eye conditions change, then maybe consider that option, otherwise contact lenses are pretty easy.

  3. I got LASIK done in 12 years ago, totally worth it for me! I had it done when I was living in London, and they didn’t give me any anesthetic aside from the eye drops. Really excited for your new life without glasses! 😉
