Sumba day 6: cashew farm, fancy restaurant, arriving Bali

Our flight was 4:40pm so we spent the morning super chill at the hotel. Breakfast then packing listening to music. We watched 2 episodes of spring, the documentary about track and field by Netflix. I have watched 3 episodes by myself and didn’t find it very interesting but with the girls, somehow it was more fun.

We checked out the hotel by noon to check out a cashews coffee farm and had some testing of cashew cookies. Girls didn’t like them, finding it too bland, I love them! Our taste buds are so different.

Cashew pudding, topped with cashew and local honey

Cashew milk and nuts and honey tasting. Girls love the citrus honey so we got cashew and honey as souvenir.

Very neat farm that employs 300 local staff. I love seeing local business flourish

First time seeing the coffee just out of the tree. That is our guide/drive Moses

Then we went for lunch at the fanciest hotel in town. It’s open, made out of bamboos, English speaking staff all trained in the Sumba hospitality school. The food was amazing too, girls had satay, I ordered 3 vegan dishes, and husband had a beef stew

Then on the way to the airport, we stopped by a local market to get some sweet potatoes and broken corn for porridge

One thing that is very particular about sumba culture is that they build the grave outside their house, just like these, the flat construction on the right

Our flight was delayed for an hour and we finally got to our Bali villa around 9pm. I was glad that I asked the staff to get us some fruit, so we had fruits and went to bed.

Back to Bali feels like back to “civilization”, aka traffic, people, stores, business. It’s good as it’s more convenient, not good because everything feels too commercialized compared to Sumba. Fortunately we have a big villa in the quietness to chill and rest.

  1. That restaurant does not look fancy! I get that it’s “fancy” for Sumba though. The food looks amazing (what is that purple drink?!)

I can’t wait to see what Bali is like compared to Sumba.

  2. I bet it was nice to be in a less industrialized area for awhile. It’s nice to get away from the noise, traffic, etc. But that comes with other trade offs of course. Your lunch looks delicious. I love the style of that building with all the bamboo!

  3. I love the bamboo restaurant too! Super cute. At the local market, do people speak English? Or did your guide help? I guess I’m not even sure- what language do they speak there?

Will you be in Bali then for the rest of your trip? Looks like a condo or something? Nice! You’ll have lots of space and be able to cook some of your own food then, right?

Yes, we will be staying in Bali for 8 nights in two areas. We are staying in villas to be more comfortable. Will take a pic of our villa later.
