This week I was in all go out mode. Do things I’m not comfortable with, be out there, hoping something good happens. I treat it as investment, putting eggs in various baskets, hoping eventual returns.
- I made my first presentation at a conference in Brasilia. It’s my first public appearance, fortunately in English still as other panelists are foreigners too, and a topic that I am not expert but comfortable enough to talk. I felt a big relief Tuesday afternoon once it’s done.
- I asked for an introduction meeting for our team to our new director, the most important person for the Brasilia office. I’m not sure we are ready, I have the speech in mind but need to put them into ppt and coherent speech. I thought she will give us the slot in 2-3 weeks, to my surprise she responded positively right away and wants to have the meeting next week. On top of that, she asked to have lunch with me alone asap.
- I joined my team to present his work in San Luis, a northeast city of the country. It was overnight trip and it went well. I’m tired (writing this post on flight that departs 5am and we left hotel 3:30) but I thought it would be good opportunity for me to “network” or simply show my face. Again, not my favorite thing to do but it’s needed.
- I organized a last minute weekend trip for the family, as girls don’t have school on Friday. It will be 2 hrs away from Brasilia, one day stay at an old inn. I would prefer to stay home as I really enjoy our relaxed weekends. But I also don’t want to miss the chance to visit nearby places when we have the long weekend. The upcoming weeks until we go to Cusco will be busy in various front so a short gateways will help to recharge the mental battery.
- I have started to speak in Portuguese with people, at work, at doctor office, even with professional acquaintances. The first barrier to cross is going smooth. I feel less embarrassing, I am talking progressively faster, really proud of myself. Taking lessons 3 times a week helped to keep the pace as I speak to my teacher exclusively in Portuguese, listening at least 20 min of podcast while I get ready before work also helped a lot.
Ok taking off!
Just landed and adding one more thing
I volunteer to guide advanced Spanish conversation group at kids school. It will be every other Friday for an hour. I’ve never done this before but thought it would be fun, contribute to the school community, and meet with new people. I’m starting next week.
Well done on all fronts! That early meeting with your director would make me nervous too, but I’m sure you’ll handle it brilliantly. Sleek PowerPoints are totally overrated anyway!
Will your 1-1 lunch with her happen before or after your presentation?

Coco I am SO impressed with your ability with languages! I find it SO hard to converse, I can often understand when spoken to and almost always in writing, but then I struggle to find words to speak coherently. I need to remember that when people speak in English to me – but struggle – I never judge them and I only encourage, so it would make sense that if I’m speaking Spanish or French or whatever, people are also (hopefully) not judging me. I cannot believe how quickly you are picking up Portuguese! I am SO impressed and inspired!
