Updated About Me, mind-blowing podcast, and my work

I am doing NaBloPoMo this month. 30 blog posts in 30 days. Welcome new readers!!! I updated About Page in case you are new here.

This week has been really busy at work, rightly so as I was away most of October and things need to get done! I am not complaining, just stating the fact that I come home super tired. Fortunately, I have little massager waiting for me. Lizzy did the whole thing massaging my feet, making me comfortable with pillows and blankets. Wonderful no?

I listened to this while running and at the gym, and it blowed my mind. I love the feeling of being surprised, amazed, especially when it’s a topic that I was unfamiliar with and not even interested. Well… Tim does it again. It got me so interested that I chose this book as my next reading.

Many of you asked what I do. I am an economist by training, finished my PhD in Economics in 2011, and started working in my current job. My field is development. My job entails relocating every few years. I spent my first 6 years in HQ in the US covering latin American countries (Chile, Nicaragua, Brazil). Then we decided to try being in the field. We moved to the Philippines in 2017, absolutely loved the experience, and decided never going back to HQ again (if possible!). In October 2022, we relocated to Indonesia Jakarta. So far we like our life in Jakarta, and work is interesting. When my 7 and 11 years old ask me what I do. I say I help people, especially less well off people. When they ask how do I do that, I’d say I try to convince governments to do the right things.

Hope that answers your question. 🙂

  1. My job is also hard to explain to other people. So I try to talk about it as little as possible. Most people don’t know what ‘fixed income’ or ‘bonds’ are. So I say I work in finance or asset management. I love what I do but have sort of accepted that most people just won’t or can’t understand my work. My parents really try to understand it and my dad asks a lot of questions. But I try to close out any discussions about my work as fast as possible!

  2. Thanks for sharing about your work. I still don’t know what you do on a daily basis, but I guess that’s just the nature of the beast… like Lisa said, it’s hard to explain what you actually spend your time on when you’re in the office for 8+ hours. LOL (I know I will struggle to explain my job efficiently.)

  4. I like you description of your job. Like some other commenters, I’m not sure exactly what you do on a daily basis- but so many jobs are like that. It does sound fascinating, especially the part about relocating frequently- very different from most jobs I’m familiar with.
That podcast sounds… worrisome? I haven’t listened to Tim Ferris in a while, maybe I”ll give it a try.

  5. The economics of development sounds interesting, I am sure your job is very satisfying. Of course less so when you try to convince a government to do the right thing and they do the opposite. Yay to massage! Very nice.
