Saturday favorites

We had a fantastic Saturday. So many favorites.

Favorite activity: going to girls swim challenge. The school organizes a challenge very few months to track progress of the swimmers. For this one, Sofia agreed to skip a fancy sleepover of a friend’s birthday to attend. I am so glad she is fine with that because she broke all her records!!! Look how serious she looked between the 100 IM.

Lizzy did okay, especially given that she joined 25 meters butterfly (her least favorite stroke). She was quite chill after her swims.

Girls’ favorite drink: Lychee ice team while they waited for their main dishes (ramen, udon, and sushi)

Favorite movie in 2023: WILD TALES!!! Oh gosh… I am sooooo in awww with this movie. It was introduced by Tim Ferriss 5 bullet Friday newsletter, otherwise I would never find it. I found a version that had no subtitles, only castellans (Argentinian Spanish) and it blowed my mind. It’s an outstanding plot, acting, capturing to perfection the state of Argentinians. It’s a movie that I kept thinking after it finished, kept reading reviews wanting to capture every detail that I may have missed. Definitely the best movie I’ve seen in a LONG time.

Favorite food: kabocha! CORN and KABOCHA are my favorite food in the world. I could live on them if I have to. It’s not easy to find good kabocha in Jakarta though, so when husband bought some for me this week and I tried it, OMG! I was in love!!!

Girls’ favorite movie: they watched Are you there God? It’s Margaret. I knew they’d love it and it did not disappoint.

Girls’ favorite movie food: I prepared a fruit plate, oven baked chips, and nuts. No dinner but just snack bar when they watch a special movie. They really enjoyed it. After the movie, they asked me about when I got my period, when I started to wear bra, why Jewish people hates Christian. Definitely a good movie for chatting afterwards.

  1. I haven’t seen are you there God yet but I do want to watch it at some point. Your girls’ question about Jews hating Christians is interesting. I kind of think of the hate as primarily going the other way with Christians and other religions treating people of Jewish faith horribly. Of course there is a lot of nuance to the topic, especially with the conflict in Israel.

I am glad you guys had such a great Saturday! Ours was pretty good, too. Some frustrating parenting moments but such is life with really little kids.

  2. Yes I am also mystified – I am Jewish and never ever was hate towards other religions something that was acceptable … Jewish people are often proud of their culture or faith but hate is probably not the right word?

There were neighbors who didn’t want to babysit at our house bc we were Jewish when I was growing up but I never saw it go in the other direction … maybe ultra religious sects are different but that’s definitely a small minority and an entirely different world than what was depicted in Margaret …

  3. Oh gosh, I LOVED Wild Tales, such a funny movie. We saw it in the theater when it came out, and I remember that I thought a woman was going to choke, she was laughing so hard.

Interesting question from your daughters about Jews hating Christians after watching “Are you There God”. I haven’t seen it yet, but I loved the book, and I don’t remember there being any anti-Christian content. I’ve always felt like the prejudice goes more the other way, with Christians being more judgmental and cruel to Jews.

  4. Are You There God was one of my very favorite books growing up. I haven’t seen the movie though- it does sound like a great movie to get conversations rolling with your daughters. I don’t actually remember anything in the book about Jews hating Christians??? I just remember Margaret trying out all different religions.
It does sound like a really nice day! Congrats to your daughters on the swim challenge.
