Can you make anything comforting?

Wednesday started well but ended with some work related stress. I was impatience with the girls as I tried to fix the IT issue almost close to bed time. I didn’t get to say bye to husband either as I really wanted to just sleep and wake up with a better mood.

During the run this morning I was thinking I should do something comforting when I don’t feel my best. Then I started to list things that give me comfort

  • quiet morning
  • the moment I lie down for my morning meditation.
  • first sip of coffee – usually capucchino with milk lab almond milk
  • a bowl of warm and nourishing oatmeal
  • getting into bed at night
  • going to the gym\
  • my office reading chair with AC on and blanket on
  • hugging my loved ones
  • listening to songs of my 20s
  • reading some of your blogs as I feel like you are my old friends
  • going for a run to the same route
  • making me a tea/coffee and fill my water bottle when I get to office

Then I realize, one thing that these things have in common is that I DO THEM REPEATEDLY

So I wonder, if I introduce something new and do it everyday… will that thing become comfort too?

If we can choose what things to like, to feel comfort, wouldn’t it be great that we choose things that we know are good for us too?

For example, if I want to adopt meditate between end of work day and start of parenting evening, if I do it consistently for an extended period of time, will that become a comforting activity?

Another example, when I am stress, I like munch on crunchy things, chips, popcorn, crackers, and ruin my appetite for later. If I switch that activity to jumping jacks or a short run? will I change my seek-comfort-habit?

mmmmm… what do you think? Can we make anything comforting?

What is your comfort list?

  1. Interesting idea…I have nothing against jumping jacks, but I don’t think of them as comforting. But I guess anything we do regularly brings us a sense of normalcy, which can be very comforting. So perhaps! Nice idea. I also like crunchy snacks.

  2. Oooh… I like this. I would say, if you do something regularly it could have the effect of becoming comforting, just because it’s familiar. It’s funny you mention crunchy snacks- that’s the biggest thing I feel like I need to change right now. I come home from work and dig into pretzels or chips, and it’s not good! I’m not sure if I can substitute jumping jacks though. I’ll have to think about this.

  3. I don’t know that doing something every day can make it comforting… it has to be something that truly comforts me. There are kind of a limited number of things that comfort me, like hugs and snuggles with my kids, reading (to my kids or on my own), sitting by our fireplace, etc. I do need to work on seeking out comforting activities when I am feeling frustrated, though!

  4. I think anything that is part of our routine is somewhat comforting, in the sense that we expect it. I don’t know if everything that we do routinely is comforting by itself, but the routine surrounding it, is.
