Midweek check in

I am so glad that I’m almost half way through this hectic and stressful week due to my manager visit. Let me just say, he’s not a pleasant person to be around. Let me give you one concrete example to illustrate:

we were having a lunch meeting with a high level official, several ranks higher than him. As the person arrives and I handled her the menu to order. She casually said: something light. My manager said: here are the appetizers. Then she ordered salmon. And in her face, he reacted saying: THAT IS NOT LIGHT! Do you really need to comment????? grrrrrr…. I had to bite my tongue not to comment: THIS IS TO POLITE!

Anyway… highlight so far:

  • My helper Sri managed to follow this recipe and the final dish turned out great! Now I feel more confident to ask her to prepare new dishes, simply sending her recipes.
  • Someone visiting Jakarta brought me a box of chocolate! how nice!
  • I’ve made reservation for daddy’s upcoming birthday lunch.
  • I woke up with a headache and despite low energy level, I feel much better after 5 miles run. Does anyone find second half of the cycle harder to exercise? exertion level seems higher for the same level of activity.
  • I took advantage of thanksgiving sale and ordered a new oura ring. My current one’s battery last 36 hrs only.

gotta go… last day having lunch with my manager, this time one-on-one.

  1. I hope that your manager lunch goes well! I know that having a boss in town is always a bit stressful, even if they are nice, as it puts added pressure on our week! Do you think the boss is acting about the salmon/higher boss that way because of gender or is he just overall a bit difficult?

  2. Do you have to interact with this manager remotely on a regular basis? Like on video calls for meetings and check ins? Or you have another direct supervisor at your location that you primarily deal with?

    1. Not as regularly, fortunately. I have another lead in Jakarta who’s fantastic but he’s not technically my manager. So overall, I don’t need to report to my manager so frequently.

  3. Having a bad boss is awful. I haven’t had many in my career but when I do, they really impact my enjoyment of my job. Same goes for my direct teammates. That is probably more impactful than my boss actually. My boss is so incredibly hands off. He has way too much on his plate and probably has 15-20 direct reports? It’s nuts.
