Wednesday running related thoughts

  1. I have a crush! There’s a runner that I see from time to time. He’s local, has the built of a distant runner, looks so kind and calm, perfect running form. Every time I see him, I get a thrill! It gives me a push to catch up with him, which I rarely manage more than few minutes. I entertained the idea of say hi to him, just curious what he’s training for. But I haven’t because sometimes a crush is more special when it’s in our head. I deeply love and attracted to my husband, no doubt about it. But this little runner’s crush is fun to have!
  2. I realized that becoming a runner made me a more risk taker than I would normally be. I am super risk averse in financial decisions for example, but with running, I am getting better at taking risk, meaning running at faster pace that is comfortable. Running at uncomfortable pace and knowing that I am not breaking anything, that my body is built to do that. I am learning to push myself and it’s thrilling!
  3. I wish there’s an AI that writes down ideas that I have while running. Sometimes I’ll take a walk break just to write them down. It could be to-do, gift ideas, blog ideas, etc.
  4. My running has improved since I started with Drew. I love his coaching approach: compassionate, positive, reciprocate my excitement, and push me to my moving limit. Big thanks to Sarah for introducing me to him. I want to apply these to parenting Sofia, who’s becoming teens.
  5. This morning Sofia got up at 4:50am for her 5:4507am swim practice. I spent 10 min with her before she leaves. I asked her who comes on Wed morning. She said: it varies. Kids show up in some days but not in others, maybe depend on their mood of the day. I told her: I don’t decide whether I run today or not, if it’s a running day, I go out and run. That’s called discipline. Fortunately, Sofia rarely asks to skip a practice.
  6. My latest running music has been Dua Lipa’s moonlight. I love it!

All these ideas came during my hard work out today! 2 miles warm up, 2 sets of 5k at 10-15 secs slower than the desired HMP, 3.5 minutes rest in between, and 2 miles cool down. It was a daunting workout, but I finished it so SATISFIED!

  1. I’m with you on number 3! I have so many good ideas while running and I’m always afraid that I’ll forget them by the time I’m home. Someone told me that they take voice notes, but that interrupts my run too much.

Kudos to Sofia for being so disciplined. I’m sure she’s got that from you!

  2. I think you can just say “Hey Siri, take a note that says (blank).” I just tried it and it worked! Do you have Siri activated on your iphone? Seems like that would do the trick without having to touch anything on your phone.

Asher really does not like the early morning swim practices. He has had to do them over the years and would go, but has tried to avoid them more and more recently (if afternoon practice available, he’ll definitely choose that one). It’s hard, because teens are literally wired to sleep later, per research, and that sleep IS important, so I would feel uncomfortable “forcing” it at that age… thankfully right now he’s on a break from swim so that he can do high school volleyball (which practices daily after school, no early mornings!) so it’s not an issue. And then this winter he’ll transition to high school swim team, which also practices in the afternoons.

  3. I do a lot of thinking on my long runs, too, even though I’m usually listening to a podcast. Sometimes I zone out and stop listening to the podcast and let my mind wander/delve into things that pop into my mind during the run.

  4. Maybe Sofia has inherited not only your discipline, but also your love of early mornings!

Your “running crush” is kind of like a celebrity crush. You have no intention of cheating on your husband, but it’s still fun to have these things! Plus maybe it will make you run even faster.

Every once I’ll stop in the middle of a run to put a note in my phone, but now I’m wondering if Kae’s suggestion would work- I’ll have to try it.
