I fell asleep at 7pm while doing my LED face mask, woke up 1am (as per jet lag schedule), responded to some Indonesia messages for Cookie’s documentation, read few minutes of this book, few sips of Camomile tea, fell asleep again until 4:30am. I FEEL SOOO ENERGIZED NOW. Am I over jet lag? It has been only 3 days so maybe not yet, but I take this! 🙂
Thursday in office was another day full of chatting. People just dropped in, sit down without invite, and started chatting with me. Younger me would hate it to be disrupted, but my new role requires me to listen to the teams, so I am glad that they did it proactively instead of me going to them.
Obviously, this means that I only got to do my to-do list later than planned, which is fine when I don’t have a family to go to.
I love that people spontaneously organize lunch plans every day. This is a cultural difference compared to Asia (you need to book lunch meetings). So I can see that I won’t be eating my desk in Brazil, ever. I can always find someone to dine with. This is a proper lunch break!
Today’s plan:
- get local phone sim cards for me and the family
- request internet connection for our house
- order a washer
- hopefully I get to find a set of sofas that I like so I can order
- maybe relax a bit? I feel quite tired since I arrived as I was non stop.
I completely relate – I used to hate distractions and just wanted to focus on my work. I admire how you’ve embraced these spontaneous chats. It’s a skill I never quite mastered!
Also, the work culture shift sounds great. Having a real lunch break every day is a win! Hope you find some time to relax amid all the errands.

Coco, I think you would like this book very much written by Dr. Gloria Mark: https://www.amazon.com/Attention-Span-Finding-Fighting-Distraction/dp/1335449418 It is written by an actual academic, researcher, psychologist. Even though I read a lot of order books on this subject including Stolen Focus after your recommendation, I would say it is a level up from everything I read before. Cal Newport has a blurb on it and being a listener of his Deep Questions podcast, I understand how some of Cal’s advice on attention is based on Dr. Gloria Mark’s research. She explains different attention states (rote to focus) and more.

Maybe you are over the jet lag! That would be nice. Sounds like a lot of good (and exciting) things are happening with the new job. When does the family arrive? I’ll bet you miss them, but maybe it’s good to get settled first before they arrive.
I hope you get some time to relax this weekend!

wow, I don’t know how I’d feel with spontaneous lunch plans. I like to be left alone at lunch 😉 but I think if it’s something that is culturally expected I would adjust. You are a machine! Being so productive- well done!!!
