THE way to start the day

There are many things I’d like my girls to learn and adopt in life, one of them is to start the day with some form of physical activity. It’s a lifestyle choice that I wish I adopted earlier in life.

Tuesday night Sofia said she’s going to put her alarm to 5:30am so she can run with me. She said that these days she’s not doing exercises (which is not normal to her), so she wants to exercise in the morning even if it means sleeping less. I couldn’t encourage more.

Instead of running, I suggested her we swim as it was my rest day. We asked Lizzy the night before if she wants to join, she said yes and insisted that we wake her up.

5:45am: we got to the pool. We did laps for about 40 min with stops. Sofia was doing her own thing as she’s fast. I tag along with Lizzy and really enjoyed being in the water and witness the sunrise.

Just before we finished, I suggested that we do one lap at the outdoor pool with very cold water. They agreed. It was really cold but we enjoyed the “challenge”.

We felt energized and happy to start the day with some movement.

To them, starting the day doing something with mom is probably the most fun part of the day, and post-energy endorphin was the bonus.

What is one habit that you’d like your kids to adopt?

  1. WOW. I’m impressed. My daughter would never, ever get up early to exercise (although to be fair, she already gets up at 5:30 because high school starts so early.) That would be the one habit I wish she would adopt- exercise, of any kind, at any time of day! She’s just not into it. For a while she was doing a little weight lifting (at home, with light weights) but she didn’t enjoy it so she stopped. I’ve suggested several other activities but she hasn’t tried any of them. I’m not pushing it, but I always talk about how exercise is part of a healthy life, and as she gets older she’s going to need to incorporate it.

  2. I think you’re being a great role model… even if your kids might adopt that habit later in life. My family was always very active, but I adopted the early morning physical activity as an adult in my thirties!
