Weekend: sickness and long run

The weekend went on almost like a planned except that we spent the Saturday morning in doctor offices. First, I went with Lizzy to see dermatologist, a follow up visit. I told her about Lizzy’s recent bacteria infection caused by open bites, and that daddy is having similar issues and is sick. She immediately told me to take daddy to see a doctor as bacteria infection can cause heart issues. I text daddy and booked a visit to our doctor. Lizzy’s doing well, her open wound is almost gone and she was happy to get balloons at the doctor’s office, an asian norm I think (something kids would love after the visit!).

We met with daddy in doctor’s office. Clearly he was getting worse. Fever was still on the 4th day as fierce as day 1. He was having a headache, his right arm/back was hurting, he barely sleeps. The doctor saw him and asked: how are you doing? He said: fine. I said: no, he’s not fine at all. The blood test confirmed he has bacteria infection, his inflammation marker was to the roof. His arm/back pain was caused by enlarged lymph nodes. The doctor cleaned his wound, gave him topical antibiotics, gave him injection of paracetamol, observed him for an hour, tested him for dengue and all. 1.5 hrs later, we could leave the doctor office. It was “funny” that the doctor told him that you should come to see doctor after 3 days of fever and getting worse. “I told him!!!” I couldn’t contain myself.

Sofia stayed at home reading with Cookie. I am so glad that she’s old enough to be independent and self sufficient as we were out the whole morning.

Saturday afternoon I went for mani/pedi, it was sooooooo nice. After my appt, I wrote down in my planner to schedule the next appt 6 weeks from now.

Sunday: I had 16 miles in my training. I woke up with some headache despite a good sleep. First bad sign, I was getting anxious that I was sick too. Then the air quality was bad, AQI of 162!!! I didn’t have temperature so I wanted to give it a try. I went to the gym and ran easy for 7 miles. I got too bored and decided to go outside, despite of AQI 150 then and the sun came out. My original plan was to run 8 miles easy and 8 miles moderate effort. I knew I didn’t have it on me, so I just continued to run easy. The heat, the sun, the air were all less than ideal, or what I told me so, by mile 10 I decided to cut it short as this would be my second 16 miles run this week. Then by mile 14, I was feeling okay, so I texted Sofia if she wanted to join me for my last 2 miles. She said yes and I finished my 16 miles with a big smile. 🙂 Not my best run, but glad to have done it. It marked my highest mileage week of all time, 57 miles.

After a long shower, breakfast, 20 min stretching and some resting as headache was back, I took the girls out for our little fun adventure. how fun? going to the groceries store. We passed by new exhibitions and it was fun to imitate. The girls helped to bring groceries back. Sofia asked while carrying her heavy backpack: what was used before car to move around? I said: carriage with horses. She responded: ok never mind. Cars are okay. 😆

Now that they are older, they both do chores on weekends when we don’t have helper, including making beds, doing dishes, tidying up, laundry when needed, and helping with food preparation. This weekend they even learned how to cook hash browns in the air fryer. As I watched Lizzy stepping on the bench and doing dishes so proficiently, I smiled at this little person growing up. 🙂

The rest of the day included meal prep: vegetable curry with tofu, aduki bean and millet porridge (pre-run meal), steel cut oats, vegetable soup for husband. I also watched few episodes of a chinese TV series, and had two hours of home massage. I could finally relax as daddy was getting better.

What a weekend. I hope daddy continues to improve while the rest of family ditches the virus smoothly.

  1. I am glad your husband went in! I would have had to speak up too when he said he was ‘fine’. Sheesh. Hopefully he’s on the mend and feeling back to full health soon. I hope you continue to dodge it!

Nice work on your high week of mileage!

  2. I’m so sorry. What a hard way to end a vacation season 😦 Hoping he makes a speedy recovery and that you stay well.

Congrats on such a great week of running despite all the other things going on (and the heat + virus!!).

  3. Oh, no! It sounds like your husband is in bad shape. I hope he’s feeling better soon!

I adore that photo of the girls doubling the sculpture. Too cute!

  4. Ugh that air quality thing sounds really frustrating!! And obviously it’s not something you can control. Maybe that would be one perk of moving out of Asia or another big city like that eventually? We are supposed to get a big snowstorm tomorrow, which is going to affect my ability to get outside much this week. The roads will probably be snowy and icy all the rest of the week. Ugh. It’s a bummer because I’m motivated and want to run and/or go to the gym in the mornings, but with the roads all snowy, it limits me. Or I’ll be stuck doing treadmill runs (or some other kind of cardio at home).

Glad the illnesses are on the mend! Kind of freaky! Glad he got treatment when he did.

  5. I’m glad your husband didn’t get sick in the middle of your vacation, much better to have that happen at home. Also really glad you took him in to the doctor, and he is now on the mend. Scary! It sounds like you had a pretty nice weekend in spite of it all. Congrats on your run, that crummy AQI can be dangerous.

  6. I love how your husband said he was “fine.” Ha! I wonder how long it would have taken him to get treatment if it weren’t for you. Anyway I hope he’s feeling better now.
Yes, I’ve had long runs like that, where everything seems to be working against you and you get through it anyway! It’s good, it builds mental strength, and shows you that you can push through even when you don’t feel great. Nice job!

  7. I am so sorry that both your kid and husband got sick with a bacterial infection. I am so glad you went and saw a doctor. Why are men so reluctant to get help sometimes? GAH. I hope they’re on the mend.

Kudos to you for getting that long run done.
