Weekend highlight: Run and McDonals

Saturday started with 1 hr easy run, fortunately no issues with my ankle. What a relief. Then I went to Sofia’s swimming practice. It was a peaceful 2 hrs as there was only one other parent there, it was breezy and I enjoyed watching her swim while read my book. I should come more often.

the rest of the day was lunch, Lizzy’s swimming practice while I stayed at home, went to get groceries with my mom, first solo outing with her since she got here. It was nice to chat random things like how my bare skin looks. I cleared my skin with my dermatologist and now I don’t use much foundation and my skin still looks clear and fresh.

Sunday: 20 miles in the book! It went so well! I only struggled mildly at mile 15, the rest of the miles were enjoyable despite humidity at 90%. I picked up Sofia after 17 miles and went for 3 more miles with her. She kept up with my pace this time and she said she felt great! Look at her, sweat even at her ears. She got McMuffin for breakfast again while we chatted about random things.

20 miles doesn’t feel daunting anymore. I was not anxious before the run, which is the first time. I am super happy with the training this round. Zero pain/injury around my hip/back, either because the training plan is different than my previous coach, strength training sessions, or reached the end of my chiropractic adjustment. Either way, I am relieves not to have to worry about injury before my marathon in 7 weeks. YAY!

We had a very nice family lunch, team work as we all contributed to its preparation. I made salmon with onion, the greens, and the tofu noodle salad. Husband cooked the broccoli with shrimp, cleaned all the vegetables, and grandma prepared edamame with chicken and mushroom. A big elaborated Sunday lunch feels very homey, our happy place.

We went to the mall after lunch to get some spring clothes for the girls as we are going to Shanghai in 3 weeks. They also got Italian ice cream before we went home.

Girls played piano and did their mandarin homework while I read. Then it was time for Lizzy’s jogging for the day, first time in a longgggg time. We did 20 min of 2 min jogging, 1 min walking to get to McDonals. She did great! Even when she was jogging, she said she likes running with me. post run pic!

and happy with the happy meal

She even asked to run on Saturday, and potentially Wednesday, even without Happy Meal as reward! Let’s see if she follows through. I guess the key to get kids to running is to make is slow, fun, and some goal/reward at the end.

It was a very active and fun weekend! Next weekend, I have another 20 miler in the book, already looking forward to it.

  1. Oh, when I started reading this I got scared about your ankle, because I hadn’t read the previous post- “oh no, Coco sprained her ankle too!” but no- glad to hear it’s fine. Great job Lizzy and Sofia with their running! And great job with the 20 miler, and glad to hear the training in general is going well. That marathon will be here soon!

  2. Made my day when you texted that cute pic of Sofia the other day 🙂 During COVID when all swim practices were cancelled, I’ll always remember how that summer we would go swim at the gym (where we could reserve a private lane) instead of his swim practices, and then ride our bikes to McDonald’s after. Haha. We had to order food to go (since inside was closed then still) and we would sit outside on the curb and eat a sandwich. Seems strange to look back on but I really cherish those random memories! And as terrible as covid all was, there were some silver linings, too- like those swim outings that we probably wouldn’t have done if the regular practices hadn’t been cancelled.

Glad your training is going well! That’s all very impressive!

  3. Sounds like a great weekend! I am glad your 20 miler went so well. That is such a confidence boost. I miss that feeling of a really successful training run – but I don’t miss it enough to get back to marathon training! I do look forward to running halves again when the kids are a bit older and can be left alone in the morning while Phil sleeps in… but that feels far off still!

It’s nice that you got 1:1 active time with both girls this weekend! 1:1 time is so nice!!

  4. I hate humidity, you get a lot of bonus points from me for running in that. 20 miles! That’s no joke, congratulations. I’m glad you’re feeling better about it and the fear is gone now.

  5. Humidity is hard when training! I did a lot of training in Louisiana and Missouri where you can’t tell if you are sweating or just wet! I don’t miss that. However I think it makes you stronger and have even heard about people doing altitude training in flat places but using heat and/or humidity as a substitute.

Having a McDonald’s treat is a good motivation to run! I used to get Baskin Robbins after working out and although it probably negated any calorie burn, it made the workout worth it!
