5 on Friday: dealing with disappointment and fun groceries run

  1. Something that I was hoping to happen is not happening, job wise, and that was something I had to deal with this week. I went out for a run right after the news came, which helped to process it. It was a combination of relief (the waiting was over), disappointment, and self doubt. Yet, I tried not to force my mind to go somewhere else to avoid the negative feelings, but to let them come out. Surprisingly, I started to think about things that I was grateful and the list was very long. When I zoomed out, things look much brighter.

2. I want to learn to look as Cookie (our cat) with curiosity and zen. She’s very curious in a familiar environment, not fuss about anything, and rest and relax whenever she can.

3. We had parent teacher kids conference this week. Lizzy set goals to (1) focus more and (2) slow down. Sofia set the goal to be more organized and speak up more in class.

4. Sofia accompanied to get groceries and we got so much! I wrote down a list and she was tasked to cross them off. We filled our cart with vegetables, fruits, materials for making lasagna this weekend (per Sofia’s request), chicken nugget (per Lizzy’s request), and goldfish that costed $10!!! It was fun.

5. Super excited for the weekend: swimming time trial, making yummy food, 20 miler on Sunday, and playdate for Lizzy.

  1. I also use running to process things or to blow off steam; it is such a good way to do that! I like feeling nice and tired while also having a chance to think about or not think about something that is bothering me! I hope that whatever it was gets resolved soon! Good luck on your long run this weekend!

  2. I’m sorry about the disappointing news but commend you on zooming out and seeing the big picture. Also, you reminded me about the importance of articulating the feelings as they are, thank you. So often when I feel “off” I don’t name them. But I should be honest with myself and call them by their true names “guilt” or “restlessness” or “doubt”

  3. I’m sorry to hear about the disappointing news at work. You handled it well and running/exercise is always a helpful part of me dealing with disappointment, too.

Enjoy your weekend!! Good luck with the 20 miler!!

  4. I’m so sorry about your disappointing news, but it sounds like you have gained a bit of perspective and are able to cope with it. I like the idea of being like your cat. I think that all the time about my dog – to go through life just joyful and happy to be here, I think that should be my goal!
Good luck with your run and wow, that’s a lot of groceries. I mean, I understand, my grocery runs are INSANELY big!

  5. Sorry about your work stress! That’s a bummer. Doesn’t sound like that came at the best week of the month either, given you already feeling kind of in a down phase.

Hope your 20 miler is going well! I think you’re out there now 🙂

  6. I hope your 20 mile run went well, and I’m glad that running helped you to deal with the disappointment at work. I agree, it’s important to acknowledge your feelings, to feel them rather than push them down. Sometimes that is really difficult, but it’s important work to do.

Your cat does look very zen!

  7. Oh, bummer. That does sound disappointing, but I like your way of coping- look at the things you’re grateful for. Like being able to run! I want to hear about this Sunday 20 miler (maybe I should read the next post…)
Hope you’re feeling better about the work news.

  8. Running is so good at helping to process all sorts of feelings. I am sorry for the disappointment, but I hope that means there are bigger and better things ahead for you 😉

How sweet that Sofia went shopping with you. How are food prices where you live? Insane like everywhere else?

    1. Im sure its cheaper here than the US. It varies a lot depending where we go. My usual salad bowl is 4 dollars, local people food stands probably 2 dollars, the cake Sofia had was 4, a meal at restaurant probably costs 10-30 depending where.
