Books lately

I finished 34 books so far and had a quite few 5 star books.

Sapiens: overdue book that I listened to the audiobook over 2 weeks running time. It blowed my mind.

Useful, not true: I love every single book of Derek Sivers. They are short, concise, and profound.

The changing world order. Listened during my runs and it gives a big picture view of countries rise and fall, very related to my work.

Finding ultra: I am not sure why it took me so long to read Rich’s story. Finished reading it in 48 hrs and got a new appreciation for the endurance sport, vegan plant based diet, and his approach to life and podcast.

Stolen focus: audiobook that I am finishing this week. It is a topic that I knew somehi but this book gave me a renewed urgency of protecting my time, attention, focus. I will be implementing few changes to my devise use, will share later.

I read a few non fiction books and enjoyed the first two below.

Sandwich: I really enjoyed this book and still think about it days after I finished it. Sandwich generation is usually not a positive thing in the chinese culture, as it is generation with burden for taking care of aging parents and the mental load of parenting small kids. My experience has been a positive one as my mom is healthy, independent, wise, and I am mindfully get her spend more time with us (She may join our Perth trip!). Parenting is not even but I really enjoy it. This book resonates with me mostly because I can anticipate those emotions of Rocky, and already feel nostalgic about them.

Leaving: I came across it from Nicole’s blog. The idea of infidelity and the act to pursue it is not new, but Nicole described it in a way that caught my attention. Reading it gave me a sense of peace and sadness at the same time. The book is quite realistic, the story could be happening in some of the families now. Yet, the outcome and the choices people make could differ a lot depending on their upbringing and values. I respect and understand the main characters’ choices, bittersweet mostly, and found it romantic and beautiful.

All fours: I found the idea of middle age woman wanting to escape her life and marriage interesting but cannot relate, which I guess is a good thing. This book got a lot of buzz so I read it. The first half is hilarious, the second half a bit crazy, and the ending meh.

  1. I just finished Leaving this week and also gave it 5 stars! It was so hard to put down when I got to the 2nd half of the book! I often don’t care for books with infidelity but it was done well/handled well in this book. I also really liked Sandwich. I gave 5 stars to ‘God of the Woods’ too.

  2. I’m so glad you loved Sandwich and Leaving – I did too! I have All Fours on my hold list at the library, and I’m curious to see how it will go for me. I heard it was kind of nuts! So I am definitely intrigued.

  3. I’ve always wanted to read Sapiens- maybe your review will finally give me the push to do it.

I love Rich Roll’s book! He has a great podcast too.

Leaving sounds sad- but so many people like it, I’ll check it out.
