Monday musing & October read and watch

Monday musing:

  • I was dragging my tired body sleepy mind to office. Then I met with a colleague and he looked tired too because wife went for a trip and he had to do single parenting. Sigh… coming to office is exactly what we didn’t want but had to. We wished we could take a nap at home, quietly without kids.
  • Sofia was exhausted after swim training. This is not a surprise as she couldn’t sleep nor rest well during sleepover. Someone snored and she kept waking up. She barely did any homework per my suggestion. Sleep is what she needed, so sleep she prioritized.
  • Lizzy took forever to do her math homework. Sigh… I tried to be there with help for moral support until my bed time and then told her to go to bed too.
  • Summary: we all had a tough start for the week

Highlights of the day:

Getting my 2025 planner. After debating whether to use the full year or half year, with or without cover, I decided to keep the same set, updating the cover.

Best meal:

Mango!!! I love how juicy is mangos in tropical country. We have it almost everyday, year round.

Lizzy approved her dinner: pasta with butter and cheese and all bagel seasoning, chicken Milanese and veggies.

Workout: 4 miles recovery run (was definitely fatigued from my LR), 20 min recovery routine

Media: be ready when luck happens (audiobook) while running. I didn’t know she worked at the White House.

Reading: Bel Canto (20 min)

Other tasks:

  • Booked my dental appointment: probably need to re-do my root canal. sigh.
  • Work related tasks

October reading and watching

Intermezzo: I had high hopes but concluded that it’s just okay. I thought I enjoyed her previous books but can’t remember the plot except normal people mainly because I loved the show. Conclusion: I may not read any more of her work.

The god of the woods: I enjoyed it despite sometime being annoyed by constant switching between time period and narrator. What made it an enjoyable read is the overall plot and the satisfying ending.

Revenge of the tipping point (audiobook): loved it, no surprise. I love everything this man does. He’s a gem. I love how curious and critical his mind is. I would put him to the category of broad thinking as Tim Ferriss, my all time favorite, because they always bring me an enjoyable, unexpected, fun, and mind opening ride with their craft. oh… he’s a runner too. 🙂

State of wonder: this book exceeded my expectation by far. I didn’t know I would love a book about the nature, remote community, and surreal experience. It touches so many big topics like science, grief, friendship, mentorship. Ann must have done a lot of research about the Amazons. It reads like a non fiction. Now I want to read more of her work.

Watching

Nobody wants this: fun and entertaining. Like many people said: the chemistry is great between the main characters. I also love the sisterhood story. Definitely will watch the second season.

Lonely planet: simple plot, average acting. Perfect for a day that my mind couldn’t process anything more complex.

Sweet Bobby: an informative documentary, sad to believe this can still happen.

  1. Another one of you saying how great the god of the woods is. Its on hold in the library but currently 30 weeks… Sigh.

I feel you in the tired department. I am so so tried and exhausted. I wonder if the planets are teasing us or something because I know we are not the only ones.

  2. That is a rough start to the week, I hope it improves! I’ve seen a couple of episodes of Nobody Wants This, I need to watch more.

I loved Bel Canto. I didn’t expect to, I don’t know anything about opera and hostage situations are generally lame, but I loved it.

My MIL is from a tropical country (Guyana, in South America) and she remembers the mangoes SO fondly. The ones we get here are meh.

  3. That is a tough start to the week. It’s hard when everyone is tired. The boys were tired this morning even though we fell back and gained an hour on Saturday night. It was hard to wake them! I slept ok but had a terrible dream about the election/family conflict over the election.

I read State of Wonder for book club years ago and we really enjoyed it! Patchett is one of my favorite authors – I will read anything she writes. I borrowed Intermezzo from the library. It has so much buzz so I had to check it out. I liked normal people, I hated conversations with friends. I didn’t try her last book because I hadn’t heard good things about it. If I am not connecting with Intermezzo, I will DNF. Right now I am reading ‘Colored Television’. The protagonist is kind of terrible but I am intrigued so sticking with it.

  4. Being tired is the worst and the transition of seasons always seems to trigger it. I hope you’re feeling more energy again soon.

I love mango flavor but I hardly ever buy the fresh fruit. I should do that sometime. It’s probably not as good here as in the Phillipines though.

  5. It’s so hard to transition into a week feeling tired. I know you have some great habits in place to prioritize getting rested again.

That mango looks delicious. I like the taste, but hate preparing/cutting it up for some reason so I very (very) rarely buy it. Like San, I bet any mango I buy in a local grocery store wouldn’t taste nearly as good as yours!

I am on a very long holds list for The God of the Woods, but can’t wait to read it and weigh in.

  6. Mondays are hard! It’s tough, because I need downtime on the weekend so I don’t feel burned out on Mondays. But weekend should also be fun… it’s hard to find the right balance. Kids sleepovers really throw everything off!

I felt the same as you about God of the Woods. i liked the story but kind of wish it could have been told without all the switching around.

Mango is my son’s favorite fruit! There are mango trees where we live- we don’t have one, but friends who do always give us their extras.

  7. I love the Hobonichi! But, it is very expensive here, so this year I’m trying the Kinbor range, and they are very similar 🙂

  8. I love mango; it is one of my favorite fruits. I get them a lot when I am home and they are quite good, but not always very cheap. However, they are delicious! I also love young coconut, which is a little harder to get in the US, but when I am in a place where I can get one, I will have coconut water (and meat) every day!

I liked God of the Woods, and State of Wonder. I like Anne Patchett a lot, although some of her older stuff is a little more hit and miss for me. However, anything past 2010 is usually better for me. I also like her essays like These Precious Days or This is The Story of a Happy Marriage.
