It was a very active day. Husband and I woke up at 6am and went out for a walk before girls woke up, to explore the little fox glacier town, very small, very rural, very cute.
Then we all went to explore Lake Matheson trail, 90 min walk that is well paved and easy to walk for all ages. Lizzy at high energy at the start

Halfway there, we got to the View of the views, looking at the highest peak in New Zealand, Mount Cook. The view is stunning!!!

look Lizzy’s face 🙂

another lookout: reflection pool

end of the trail

It was such a nice easy and beautiful walk to start the day. By then time we went out, almost noon, many more people arrived.
Our next stop was a glacier view point. No walking required but you get a pretty good, although distant view, of the glacier.

After morning hike, we went to have lunch for a break before Sofia and I joined the Fox Glacier walking tour in the afternoon.
We were a small group (9 in total) with a local guide that explained to us the history of this area, the glacier, the landslide, and different faunas and plants. The path in the middle of the rainforest looks exactly like a movie set in Lord of the Rings

the red tree is called Christmas tree because its flower blooms around Christmas.

my favorite pic so far!!! Glacier at the back and landslide river full of colorful stones

local orchard which is the size of a nail

we went off track for a while before returning to the main path, having to jump few rivers and steep climb, which was very fun.

That concluded our 3 hrs trekking tour, so worth it! Then Sofia and I met with daddy and Lizzy in Franz Josep to get dinner. My step count reached almost 30k for the day, so I was ready to go bed at 8:30pm already, despite still very sunny outside.
I totally see now why Fox Glacier is a must visit place. Although the main attraction is to do the glacier trek with helicopter lift, we didn’t do it because we didn’t feel very safe and we know we will have opportunities to trek glacier in the near future (perito moreno). I absolutely love the scene here, pure nature, wonder, and bliss.
Next step: Queenstown passing by Wanaka.
Everything looks so beautiful and serene. And blue! And sunny. What wonderful weather in an obviously stunning part of the world.

What a beautiful hike. Sofia is looking so mature! And so tall! That is fun that the 2 is you could go do this more strenuous outing together! I did not make it to this area but we only had a week and spent 3 nights in Queenstown so that took up most of our time in NZ. Your drive to Queenstown will be so gorgeous!!

Looks awesome! What a fun day. I love days like this on trips. And I love the rainforest pic! We’ve been to several rainforests now and I think they’re so cool and beautiful. The 1:1 time hiking with Sofia sounds so nice, too. So glad you’re having a great time! It all looks wonderful. 🙂

Absolutely stunning! 🤩 My favourite pic is the one photo no 2, the View of Views one. And so nice that you could do that Fox Glacier tour with Sofia. Hikes give you so much more details to discover compared to helicopter flights!

What a gorgeous place to hike! My husband travelled through New Zealand when he was in his 20s and he has photos of places like this – gorgeous!

SO Beautiful! I love it! We saw glaciers in Alaska, I love seeing them from the airplane when we flew in. I am scared of helicopters though, I wouldn’t take that tour either. 30k steps! Wowza!
