People and thoughts that are saving me

This is the season of chaos, mess, endless to-do list, sleepless nights, excitement, anticipation, family planning, reflection, and savoring. What’s saving my sanity despite not sleeping past 2am?

  • My husband. He’s the best partner I can ask for to go through these big life changes. I am very glad that our ideas are fully aligned, big as choosing the country to live, small as what furnitures to sell. He’s my reliable team mate to go through the endless tasks, even sleepless nights.
  • My organization provides a great support system for the move. Shipment, custom clearance, visas, housing search, settling in Brasilia. I can’t imagine doing all these without them.
  • My new colleagues in Brasilia. They’ve been generous in answering me tons of questions, some as basic as whether their kids got the yellow fever vaccine, whether they bought a new fridge, etc. They’ve been through this as many times as we did, and they understand how valuable insights are from the people who live there.
  • Colleagues in Jakarta. They’ve been helping me to sell things, indulging me with being behind with work, not showing up on meetings nor offices. They’ve been very understanding and helpful.
  • My running. Despite not training for a race, being severely jet lagged, I keep my running schedule of 6 times a week, because I need the endorphin to go through the day, and time to think/plan alone.
  • Supportive family. My girls are super collaborative with all things related to the move including not finishing their school calendar year, packing their things, decluttering toys/clothes/books, anything that I ask them to do, they do it with enthusiasm because we are in this together. My mom is also super helpful, as usual. She’s coming the day before I leave for Brasilia, and then she’ll go with us to Brazil for few months. With her by my side, I am relieved to know if I am too busy with work or in general, girls have the comfort blanket. Also, I’m super excited to go to Buenos Aires with her and my core family.
  • Thoughts. Being okay with not finishing my todo list for the day when my body needs rest; not get anxious when not sleeping enough; remind myself this is temporary; making decisions based on the filter of whether it matters in 5 years, this is especially useful when making decisions that involve money; letting go of routines and goals for the time being; being grateful for this new exciting adventure.

I can’t believe I am not getting crazy living in this mess! We sold few furnitures and everything inside are spread out until I find the energy to organize them. FUN!

  1. Oh Coco, I feel for you. Moving is so dysregulating! I practically had a nervous breakdown every day and I was only moving provinces, and my kids were not switching schools! (because they were graduated, not because they weren’t going to school, just in case that wasn’t clear). The mess and chaos of moving is so crazy-making, I am so glad you have all these supports in place!

  2. That is great that your mom can come with you and help with the settling in process. It’ll be nice to have another trusted adult to be there as you are figuring things out in Brazil! Moving is hard and I’ve only moved across the country not between continents!

  3. Oh, I’m so glad that your mom is going to be there with you to help get you all settled, that is going to be so wonderful! It sounds like you have a lot of factors involved that will help make this move a success.

  4. Oh the excitement! I love the picture of your daughter just calmly reading her book in the middle of bags and boxes. These are great time that are overwhelming but I am sure you will look back with fondness as you get off on your next adventure!
