-2 weekend in Jakarta

This was the penultimate weekend I have in Jakarta. One more “normal” weekend here and we leave.

Saturday: I woke up 6am, went to the gym for an enjoyable 6 miles TM run. Sofia wanted to do her own swimming drills, so after I showered, I accompanied her to the pool for 30 min swim training. She googled the drills, suggested herself, and enjoyed this little own training with me admiring her “perfect to me” form. I wonder if I should learn to swim. It would be so cool to share this passion of her.

Lizzy has her lego lead competition at school, daddy took her and they showed their work to 25 other groups of kids.

while Sofia had her piano lesson, I had some chill time, listening to Bossa Nova music and browsed some recipe books. Loved the vibe of the music.

then Sofia and I went to the mall. Got her a new skirt and had her favorite lunch. A hot stone plate with rice and desired toppings.

We got back home 3pm. Sofia had her piano theory lesson, Lizzy had her piano. I started watching Zero Day. I wasn’t sure as it had mediocre reviews but I liked the first episode and kept going. I finished 3 total that day.

I went to bed hopeful to the long run the next day as I haven’t run outside for a full week and haven’t run more than an hour since last Saturday.

Sunday: I woke up with pain in my throat at 6am (although I went to sleep 8:30pm), not good. why??? LR is out of the question as I had to assess whether I am getting sick again with a different virus. I was pissed but didn’t want it to ruin our day. So I went to the gym for 65 min yoga, and felt energized and optimistic to finish 30 min run on the TM. The more I ran, the less I felt the pain. Endorphins? probably.

Sofia came with me to the gym to do her gym session, drills on the floor, mostly core work. Lizzy went to my office for an art event.

I finished Zero Day in the afternoon and really liked it. I will give it 9/10. Good plot, excellent acting, and kept me guessing until the very end.

I went to bed 8pm and fell asleep shortly after. I didn’t wake up until 5:45am, pain free of any sort and no more coughing. I hope I’m on the mend.

I came to realize how simple our weekends are. Saturday some outing, either kids activities or errands. Sunday, if possible, get “bored” at home doing whatever feels right. Sofia baked cookies. I made a lemon cake and crepe. That’s the way we relax as a family. 🙂

Q: How do you relax on weekends as a family?

  1. The perfect weekend to recharge between two busy weeks—just how I like my weekends too!
I finished Zero Day yesterday. I enjoyed it, though Kai found it boring. Oh well!
When you say you want to learn to swim, do you mean you can’t swim at all, or just not well? It’s quite common for Black South African women not to learn swimming as kids, though some pick it up later in life.

  2. Sounds like a nice weekend! Hard to believe you only have a couple weeks left in Jakarta! I still kind of feel like you just moved there- I remember following your move from Manila. Is it required that you moved every couple years, or is that just your choice? I was wondering about that.

  3. Sounds like a really nice weekend, other than the sore throat! Glad that didn’t turn into anything. I’m admiring Sofia’s dedication at the gym! Drills and core work aren’t really fun, but she obviously wants to get better and is willing to put in the work. Good for her!

Ugh, I hope you can get some outdoor runs in this week! I’m thinking the air quality will be better in Brasilia so you won’t have this problem? But I don’t really know.

I’m excited for you… your move is coming up SOON.

  4. If you are wondering if you should learn swimming as well, I recommend this highly enjoyable book: Beginners by Tom Vanderbilt, https://www.amazon.com/Beginners-Transformative-Power-Lifelong-Learning/dp/1524732168 Spoiler: He has a daughter who plays chess, surfs and swims and more, and yes he learns all of them and writes a nice book about all of his experience and spends a lot of time with his daughter while doing it. I read his interviews after reading the book where he mentions how much he got to hang out with his child.
