Brief rest and on the road

I had a great short weekend, arrived Brasilia Saturday 6am with almost to non sleep but super happy to see the family. I took several naps throughout the day and not much else. Fortunately I had a great sleep that night, waking up with sunlight (past 6am) which is rare. I did 10 miles run instead of 12 as I know I over-did it last week in DC and wanted to take it easy. The bright spot of that run is that Sofia joined me for 3 miles, 100% her initiative. I thought she would complain as she hasn’t run for over a year. To my surprise, she kept up with my easy pace and seemed to have enjoyed it.

I always feel great and full of ideas to do things after a good run. So we went to a lakeside place for lunch which is super beautiful.

we are not picky so we just found the restaurant with least crowd but not empty. SOHO it was, a japanese food.

then we walked around a bit and had acai bowl. So good!

Some rest in bed before I started preparing a pasta dish for the girls, had 90 min massage, finished cooking, started packing, and left home 7pm to catch a flight to Manaus.

I don’t like evening flights as I always get so sleepy and uncomfortable but in exchange of few more hours at home, it’s worth it. We got to the hotel at 11pm and didn’t get to sleep until midnight to wake up at 6am as our meeting started 7:30am. I am not complaining because my boss arrived from DC 3am and didn’t get to sleep until 5am.

We had a productive day and witnessed this beautiful sunset.

Other thoughts:

  • I should have a packed luggage for short trips. Packing is not my favorite activity.
  • I should always bring a travel kettle with me as it’s not guarantee the hotel has it.
  • I am grateful for my coach to tell me that if I over train, injury risk is higher. So obvious but I’m glad he’s there to remind me. I run not only to train for a race, I run to cope with stress, which could lead to over training and injury, something I can’t afford as I age. I met with two colleagues who run in DC, one fully retired from running as his knee cartilage is gone. The other one also suffers hip issue. They are slightly older than me but still a good reminder to not take it for granted.
  • Every time I leave for biz trip, something happen at home. Last week was Lizzy getting sick, this time because Lizzy is not doing homework. I get annoyed knowing them, especially when I am in the middle of a meeting receiving tons of “complaining” messages from the family. Yet, I try to remind myself not to dismiss them as they are important to them. Oh… and shower hot water was gone and i need to find the fixer.
  • I miss my routines which are disrupted when traveling. Yet, I travel a fraction of what my team does. So not complaining.
  • Looking forward to sleep in my bed tonight as I don’t sleep well in hotel beds.

  1. It’s so great that you have a coach who keeps you grounded!
Sometimes the obvious things are the hardest to remember, right? It’s such a fine balance, especially when running is a way to manage stress.
And hearing those stories from your colleagues is a good reminder that we need to listen to our bodies, not just push through.
It’s good that you’re being proactive about it. Enjoy your runs!

  2. Coco, I will tell you that I suffered a major injury in 2019, and I am sure it was because I was way overtraining and underfueling. I see photos of myself at that time and am shocked at how thin I was. I didn’t feel that thin, but looking back, holy crap, I really did a number on myself. Rest is SO important!

  3. What a nice weekend with the family!

I love the idea of a travel kettle. I would use that so much. Many hotels have a little coffee pot or a Keurig machine, but I’m always reluctant to use those for tea.

  4. It’s tough to come back from a trip and jump right back into another one! I am glad it’s a short one so you can get back home to the girls and your husband. It does seem like things often happen while I am traveling! I always feel so bad for Phil since it’s hard enough when everything goes as planned!!

  5. I never sleep well when I’m away from home. There’s something about just being in your own space.

A travel kettle? I’ve never heard of such a thing but now I’m intrigued to start looking for one
