Luxuries of our weekend

I had the exact weekend how I envisioned after my Friday presentation (which went well). It felt luxurious and this post captures what I’ve been feeling.

My colleague friend gave me sourdough starter to play with! I tried to make starter years ago during pandemic and failed so this time I got super excited to actually make sourdough bread with starter already prepared. I fed the starter Friday evening and Saturday morning found this bubbly pot, super happy to venture into sourdough making.

Luxury #1: having a colleague friend who shares interests in bread making! (he’s German and super handy man).

I had 14 miles run with second half faster than first half on the plan. I slept terribly the night before, not sure why, but it happens during PMS usually. I didn’t check Oura before heading out for the run because I know seeing a low number will discourage me. I already had a bad night of sleep, I will not let it ruin me more for the weekend with a bad run.

To my surprise or not, I had a strong run by picking up the pace by more than 1 min/mile the second half. When I got home, I checked my oura and it said 61. I was right and glad I didn’t allow it to dictate my day.

Luxury #2: amazing run and the feeling of overcoming self doubt and outperform.

Few hours later, the first sourdough was ready to be baked! Look this beauty!!! I can’t believe I made it.

It doesn’t have big holes as this one is low hydration, but the texture is a good fermented bread.

I also made a big batch of kimchis, enough to be hard with others!

luxury #3: have family and friends who appreciate and enjoy my cooking, my creative outlet.

The traditional sourdough requires a second and longer rise in the fridge, so I tried it for the second one. Somehow it didn’t bake as pretty as the first one but the taste is sourer.

Sofia’s Sunday breakfast

Sunday morning was spent cooking while Lizzy did homework nearby, and listening to music. I made milanesa, pasta with meatballs, breakfast burrito, vegan rice noodles, pork ribs with eggs, crepes with strawberries jam, chicken burrito bowl. Really, enough for us for a while!

Luxury #4: weekend naps. I woke up by Lizzy when my massage therapist arrived, realizing I “overslept”.

Luxury #5: home massage.

I also spent few hours setting up Monarch after Kae’s review. It makes monthly tracking so much easier.

Luxury #6: have books that I look forward to read to. I finished Intimacy after loving audition. I am starting to see a theme/style to emerge and love it! I have started separation last night, and so happy to know she has 3 other books.

Luxury #7: shared experience with the girls. I watched Kpop demon hunters with Lizzy with homemade popcorn. I read it from Tim Ferriss how much he liked it, surprisingly, and was intrigued. Lizzy watched it many times so I asked her if she wants to watch it with me again. She was super happy and excited. I enjoyed it very much and can’t wait to listen to the soundtrack for my run this week.

What small luxuries you’ve experienced lately? And how do you define luxury?

  1. Oh I love those definitions of luxury!!

Look at those gorgeous sourdoughs! I heard that you should name your starter – my friend named hers Jennifer Doughpez. Lol! If you do name it let me know. Sofia’s breakfast – I want that breakfast!

Okay, I am putting Intimacy on my list! I meant to do that earlier but forgot. Going RIGHT NOW to the library website!

  2. I’ve never made sourdough, but I’m so intrigued. And it is delicious!

Love all the meal prep. It’s so nice to do it when there’s enough time to really enjoy the process. Plus, there is such a sense of satisfaction of being “ahead” and having food all ready for the week.

  3. My kids LOVE KPop and the Demon Hunters, especially Paul. He sings some of the songs. It’s really cute to hear his little voice!

Great job on your long run! 61 is a low score but I’m glad you still had a great run despite not sleeping well/feeling off.

Weekend naps are the best. I took a long one on Sunday. I had been up several times during the night with Will and was so very exhausted, plus I was still tired from my work trip + 10 mile race.

  4. I love these six luxuries- they really cover it all! Your weekend sounds really nice, and yes, luxurious! I agree about the run- sometimes a poor night of sleep means nothing, and it’s better not to get too upset about it before you start.

That sourdough looks so, so delicious. And all your food prep sounds incredible- you are definitely set for the week!
